How Peters received a head wound:
I wrote in my book about how Untersturmfuhrer Kurt Peters received his head injury. Early one morning (July 28th), he emerged from a French farm building, wearing a holster, containing a pistol, and was 'butt-stroked' (hit in the head) by the wooden stock of a Thompson sub-machinegun, held by William 'Jess' Huffman. Eight additional German prisoners were captured from that building, by members of the 67th AR Recon unit. This happened in a small field near Notre Dame de Cenilly and a German cash payroll (French Franc notes) was captured in the same field. This was evidently the payroll for part of the 17th SS Division and Peters and his friends were responsible for guarding it. The cash was loaded onto a farm cart.
I interviewed Jess Huffman about 15 years ago, although he was not 100% certain that the German in the photo is the same guy, it is likely, given the date and vicinity where the incident occured and the photos were taken.
